Heart of Passion (HoP) intends to pave the way for a future of socially minded, personally responsible community and business leaders.
HoP’s Young Adult Leadership Development and Certification Program (LDP) is founded on the belief that teenagers have the ability and motivation to succeed in business and servant leadership if equipped with trust and the right tools. Since 2002 we have hosted Red Carpet Day (RCD) retreats for teens with cancer, always run by other teens.
These four-day all-expense-paid retreats feature VIP treatment with red carpets, limo rides, backstage access, luxury hotels, and more. Most importantly, they allow “teens with cancer” to enjoy the normalcy of feeling just feeling like teens – no unwanted distinction. In 2011 we decided to further embrace our “for teens, from teens” approach to put the entire RCD process in the hands of high school leaders. For a school year, students learn business skills while planning, budgeting, and fundraising for their own RCD that they implement at the end of the school year. We believe that by providing this experience to capable teens during a formative time period in their lives, we are grooming our future community leaders to conduct themselves responsibly, ethically, and compassionately, while equipping them with skills that will be valuable throughout their lives, including expertise in planning, budgeting, speaking, and fundraising.
As of the summer of 2017, over 100 high school leaders have participated in the LDP. They have raised an average of $30,000 per event for six retreats in New Orleans, and four retreats in Atlanta, and one in Charlotte, helping over 200 teens with cancer (and their families) from seven states.
